FWSID to Celebrate America Indian Heritage Month.


The Fort Worth Independent School District will observe Native American Heritage Month this November with displays in the District’s Central Administration and Board Complex lobbies of native artifacts and student artwork.

The artwork will honor Native Americans in the District and community and celebrate the cultural importance of Native American heritage, said Elizabeth Gravelle, FWISD American Indian Education Program liaison. On November 2, a group of FWISD students will visit the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, Oklahoma, and the Board of Education will honor the American Indian community at its November 12 meeting. Students will attend a Native American Heritage Day Celebration and youth book club at the Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas in Dallas on november 23. 

President George H.W. Bush approved a joint resolution in 1990 designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. The observance celebrates the culture, tradition, history and significant contributions of America’s Native people. There are 573 federally recognized Indian Nations in the United States. 

Last month, the FWISD Board of Education recognized District employees, students and parents of the American Indian community at a board meeting in observance of American Indian Heritage Day in Texas, which is recognized annually the last Friday in September.

More than 360 identified Native American students in the Fort Worth ISD represent more than 57 different tribes. The District’s American Indian Education Program offers academic support and cultural education to FWISD students who identify or who are of Native American descent.

Annually the program hosts academic and cultural field trips throughout the school year and a two-week summer cultural camp in June.
