Protocols for In Person Transition Parent Letter

Dear West Handley Owls,

 We are so excited to start the transition back to in-person learning at West Handley while still supporting some of our students virtually.  Last Tuesday, the Board Trustees voted to approve a two-week extension to our virtual learning plan. This extension will allow Fort Worth ISD to phase-in students over a two-week window, with a full return of all students selecting in-person instruction on October 19. Student return dates are as follows:

  • October 5 – RISE, PK, Kinder and 1st grade
  • October 13 – 2nd and 3rd grades
  • October 19 – 4th and 5th grades

This transition allows us to slowly introduce students to the campus while providing us the opportunity to plan, implement, reflect and refine processes.  We value and appreciate your flexibility as we work diligently to prepare a safe environment for your student and our staff. 

We have uploaded our In-Person Transition Plan and a ppt of our Town Hall meeting to our campus website.  You can find us at https://www.fwisd.org/WestHandley.  Any refinements to our plan will be updated in this document and communicated to families. 

We are looking forward to continuing a productive partnership with you to ensure our students can achieve their highest potential.  I realize this year looks different with changes to our in-person procedures and the addition of virtually learning.  Regardless, we want every student to know how important they are to our West Handley community. This year our theme is Nothing Is Impossible.  As we continue to modify and adjust to the school year, I am confident that we will remain banded together as One Tribe so that we can truly overcome any challenge we face.  Below are some important things to remember.

 

Important Information and Changes

In order to create a smooth transition to the new school year and protect the safety and security of all our students, I ask for your help with few changes during virtual instruction and in person instruction: 

 

CAMPUS VISITORS - Parents and visitors will not be allowed in the school building to keep the number of personal interactions as small as possible. This includes walking students to class, lunches, meetings and early dismissals. If a face-to-face visit is required, please call the office at 817-815-5100, describe the nature of your visit and if necessary, we can schedule an appointment. 

HOME WELLNESS CHECKS - Each morning before coming to school help us by conducting home wellness check.  Please do not send student if any of the following are present:

  • Student has tested positive for COVID 19 in the past 14 days
  • Student has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID 19 in the past 14 days.
  • Fever of over 100 degrees or is feeling feverish
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing

Please advise principal if your child has tested positive for COVID 19

ARRIVAL - Doors open to welcome students each morning at 7:40am.  We will use all entry points allowing students to walk straight to class following SHINE and reduce exposure to others. 

  • PK and 1st grade students will enter in the PK wing.
  • RISE, Kinder and 1st grade Mrs. Martin’s students will enter using the gym/playground entrance.
  • 2nd grade and 3rd grade regular program students will enter through the front door.
  • 5th grade students will enter in the 5th grade wing
  • 3rd grade dual language and 4th grade students will enter in the 4th grade wing.

 LUNCH - All students enrolled at West Handley are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.  If your student is participating in Virtual Instruction they may receive Grab and Go meals on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 am until 10:00 am.  You will be required to provide student ID number at the time of meal pickup and meal pickup is located in the back of the building by the cafeteria.

OUTSIDE FOOD - To minimize outside contact, we will not be delivering outside meals to students throughout the day.  If your child does not want to eat the meal provided by the school we ask that you send a meal with your student in the morning.  In the same light, we will not allow outside treats (cupcakes, cookies, drinks) to celebrate student birthdays, 

DISMISSAL - Dismissal will be very similar to last year, just more spread out.

  • PK dismisses at PK doors at 2:15
  • Parents encouraged to use the car-pool line. Do not get out of cars or cross traffic to collect students and we ask that families do not park alongside the perimeter of campus and block the flow of traffic.
  • Car line starts on Beaty – Putnam will be used only for through traffic.
  • Kinder – 2nd grade lines up on Beaty, 3-5 lines up on Putnam
  • Car tags will used to call student to six locations at corner of Beaty and Putnam. Students board cars and next six spots called. After the 1st day, students will not be released unless the car tag is displayed.

 EARLY DISMISSALS will not be permitted after 1:45 for PK and 2:30 for K-5th grade.  Parents are asked to call the school 15 minutes in advance of arrival and provide your name & student name.  You will be asked a security question to verify your identity.  Please remain in your car have your ID ready for confirmation by staff member.  The student will be escorted to car.

DRESS CODE – Students will be required to wear standardized dress. We will continue to encourage TRIBE shirt days on Wednesdays and spirit shirt days on Fridays. 

Parent/School Connection - More than ever, in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our students’ success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. 

We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by committing to the following:  

  • Your child attends or logs into school daily and is ready and actively engages in the day’s learning experience.
  • Your child completes all assignments given by teachers both virtually or in-person.
  • Your child reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills.
  • Ask your child to shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life.
  • Identify if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject.
  • Let your child knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and beyond.
  • Maintain regular communication with your child’s teacher.
  • Contact the school if your address, phone information and email changes. We need to be able to reach you in the event of an emergency or illness.
