Mujtaba Y. wins Leo Benavides Award

Mujtaba's award

We are proud to announce our very own Leo Benavides Award winner for the 2017-2018 year. Please join us in congratulating  Mujtaba Y. for his outstanding service and representation of INA. We truly do have exceptional students. Below is the excerpt that was presented last night to honor this student. Also please enjoy the attached pictures from the awards ceremony:

Mujtaba is originally from Afghanistan. He came to the United States less than two years ago to start a new chapter of life. Throughout this time he has shown great progress in academics, in his language ability and acculturation while upholding his dedication to family and cultural orientation. Mujtaba is known as a "go-getter."  While he fluently speaks Dari and Pashto he continually strives to better his English. He is very proactive and became a member of International Newcomer Academy's United Voices for Change shortly after his arrival. Due to his proactive positive and known jovial personality he was soon nominated at the Chair for INA's UV4C. He continually goes above and beyond to create a positive impact in his student body and in his community. Mujtaba is full of empathy for others and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Mujtaba, as INA's nominated Chair, headed up this year's United Voices 4 Change project. Together they wanted to reach out to create a positive impact within their student body, the refugee population, and surrounding community during the Thanksgiving holiday. They partnered with the Community Food Bank to provide meals to over 100 families. The meals consisted of a turkey, fixings for stuffing, vegetables, juice and a cheesecake. This was a great task, as 50 Applied Learning Academy families and 50 International Newcomer Academy families received approximately 50lbs of food each for the holidays. Overall UV4C gave out over 5,000lbs of food that day.

Other than being very involved with United Voices for Change, Mujtaba is very active in boxing and trains at the Golden Glove gym here in Fort Worth. He would love to pursue a boxing career.

Mujtaba hopes to attend university along with continuing to pursue his boxing career.
