Help Your Child Prepare for STAAR Tests
Published April 14, 2023
FWISD Parents:
Texas STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) exams for the 2022-2023 academic year are starting April 18 and continuing throughout May 12.
STAAR tests will be administered to students in grades 3-12. The
number of exams administered to a student depends on their grade level. Throughout the remainder of the spring semester, students will spend at least two to four days testing.
To provide an optimal testing environment for our students, schools will be closed to visitors on testing days. Please consult your campus for information on their school testing dates.
Each spring, STAAR assessments measure student progress and whether children are ready to advance to the next grade level in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. For the first time, all STAAR testing will be administered online.
In the days leading up to STAAR, we encourage you to help your child take time to relax, get a good night’s rest and eat healthy meals so they can perform well on test days.
To help students prepare for STAAR testing, the links below provide sample questions similar to what might be on a STAAR test. The last link is a resource for parents to help students prepare.

To ready your child for testing, we wanted to provide you with these preparation tips:
THE NIGHT BEFORE
• Make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep.
• Be encouraging - let your child know that you think he/she will do well on the test.
• Plan for the morning ahead – lay out clothes to wear; have backpack ready to go.
THE DAY OF THE TEST
• Get up early to avoid rushing.
• Have your child eat a good breakfast. Remember – sugary foods can make your child drowsy.
• Have your child dress in something comfortable.
• If your child wears an assistive device, such as a hearing aid or glasses, be sure that he/she remembers to wear them to school.
• Be sure that your child attends school each day and arrives on time. Please try to avoid scheduling doctor or dental appointments on test days.
• Be positive and supportive. Acknowledge that test-taking can be challenging and explain that doing your best is what counts.
• Send your child off to school feeling confident. “You’ll do a great job!”; “Believe in yourself!” and “I love you!” are always nice to hear.
AFTER EACH TEST DAY
• Talk to your child about his or her feelings about the test, making sure that you acknowledge that taking a test is a great effort.
• Talk about what was easy and hard; ask what your child may have learned about taking the test.
• Let your child know how proud you are of them.
WHEN YOU RECEIVE THE TEST RESULTS
• Sit down with your child and go over the test results and what they mean. Talk about areas of success and the areas that offer opportunity to learn more.
• Talk with your child about things he/she will work on in the upcoming school year
Feel free to reach out to the school if you have any questions regarding test day and test results.
