BASEBALL: Arlington Heights, Benbrook Sweep Opponents to Advance to the Area Round

Two Fort Worth ISD teams advanced to the area round of the 2023 UIL Baseball Playoffs! District 6-5A Champion Arlington Heights and District 9-4A Co-Champion Benbrook advanced after sweeping its opponents out of the postseason. 

 

Arlington Heights took game one of its bi-district round series against Northwest 5-0 on the road. Sophomore catcher Caleb Eager was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, driving in three runs in the series opener. Aaron Montanez scattered two hits, six strikeouts and five walks across 5.2 innings and was credited with the win. Montanez also drove in two runs and went 1-4 at the plate. The Yellow Jackets eliminated the Texans from the playoffs in thrilling fashion thanks to a walk-off base hit from sophomore outfielder Noah Castillo. Arlington Heights won game two by a final score of 3-2. Castillo went 2-4 at the plate. Scooter New pitched four shutout innings and allowed just three hits. 

 

Arlington Heights (24-6-1) faces Argyle (26-7-2) in the area round. The Eagles finished second place in District 7-5A. The three-game series starts Thursday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. before resuming Saturday, May 13 at 5 p.m. for game two. Game three, if necessary, will take place at approximately 7:30 p.m. immediately following game two. All three games of this series will take place at Eaton High School with the winner advancing to face the winner of Aledo and Burleson in the regional quarterfinal. Benbrook made quick work of Hillsboro in its bi-district round series. The Bobcats beat Hillsboro 6-2 in game one behind a powerful performance from senior Ethan Waters on the mound. Waters struck out nine batters and was credited with the win. Benbrook eliminated Hillsboro from the playoffs with a 4-0 win in game two. Freshman Sebastian Martinez started the game and struck out 10 batters to eclipse Waters’ total by one and was also credited with the win. Sophomore Maverick Mills followed those performances by closing out each game with a shutout inning. Sophomores Ethan Smith and Santiago Cruz batted .500 for the series and freshman Fabian Ortega made his presence felt at the plate with a .429 batting average. 

 

“I could not be more proud of the overall team performance,” Benbrook coach Justin Chavez said. “We out played them offensively, defensively, and on the mound.”

 

The Bobcats will look to outplay another opponent this weekend in order to advance. Benbrook faces Van Alstyne in the area round. The Panthers swept North Dallas out of the playoffs last weekend. The three-game series gets underway at 4 p.m. Friday, May 12. Game two is set for Saturday, May 13 at 1 p.m. with game three, if necessary, immediately following game two. All three games will be played at Carrollton Ranchview High School with the winner advancing to face the winner of Aubrey and Godley in the regional quarterfinal.
