Summer Vital Link Program Links FWISD Students to Careers

Fort Worth ISD sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who participate in the District’s Summer Vital Link Middle School Program receive eye-opening, hands-on work experience.

During the weeklong program, FWISD’s Career and Technical Education students visit participating businesses to learn about essential careers, work alongside professionals on the job, and learn how school achievement is linked to workplace success.

There are four sessions for the 2023 year taking place Meadowbrook Middle, J.P. Elder Middle, Daggett Middle, Leonard Middle, and various host sites across the community. Students may participate in up to two sessions.

  • Session 1: June 5-8, 2023
  • Session 2: June 12- 15, 2023
  • Session 3: June 20-22, 2023
  • Session 4: June 26- 29, 2023

The program’s weekly sessions are free of charge. The student application deadline is Friday, May 19. Apply here.

“The program is educational and key to opening many doors for me to different careers,” explained ’22 Vital Link student Rhianna Orozco in last year’s FWISD-produced video.

All students are assigned mentors and are accompanied by FWISD teachers who supervise their work at the business site. Last summer, students visited various departments at the City of Fort Worth and Benbrook. They also collaborated with TCC departments, including Library, Aviation, Horticulture, and Fire Training. Some students tried on firefighting gear as they learned about the many facets of the profession. Others toured a power plant and discovered the wonder and challenges of generating electricity. Linebarger Law Firm facilitated visits with local dignitaries, including Mayor Mattie Parker.
