Seven FWISD Student Teams Win Third Annual Battle of the Books
More than 400 students from approximately 30 Fort Worth ISD schools competed in the 2018 Battle of the Books on May 23 at the TCU Brown-Lupton University Union. The District partners with Texas Christian University each year to host this fun and fast-paced literacy competition.
This year’s winners are Benbrook Elementary, third grade; De Zavala Elementary, fourth grade; Bonnie Brae ES and Daggett Montessori, co-champions for fifth grade; Young Women’s Leadership Academy, sixth grade; and Wedgwood Middle School andBenbrook Middle-High Schools, as the middle and high school champions, respectively.
Competing teams had just seconds to confer and respond to questions about various books and, to prepare, students must read multiple award-winning books. Teams advance to the competition from campus-level contests.
“Fort Worth ISD Battle of the Books is like a music or sporting event that brings all of the readers of the same books together in one space,” said Carter Cook, Director of Library Media Services.
Battle of the Books supports the District’s 100 X 25 FWTX initiative, which has a goal of achieving 100 percent of third-graders reading at or above grade level by 2025. Superintendent Kent P. Scribner is partnering with Mayor Betsy Price and BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead the community-wide Read Fort Worth initiative. This collective impact strategy engages parents, grandparents, and caregivers as well as volunteers from the city’s business sector, higher education, non-profit organizations, and the faith-based community.
