Dr. Scribner: ‘Each Kid … Will Follow Your Example’
More than 100 people make up the latest class completing Fort Worth ISD’s Parent University program.
A combined graduation ceremony for parents from FWISD’s Manuel Jara, Greenbriar, Bonnie Brae, Diamond Hill, Woodway, and M.G. Ellis elementary schools and the World Languages Institute was held Thursday, January 17 at J.P. Elder Middle School.
Fort Worth city and school District officials, Board of Education District 1 Trustee Jacinto Ramos and other special guests attended the ceremony. Music performed by J.P. Elder’s Mariachi Estrella Tejana, under the direction of Imelda Martinez and Jesus Pineda, greeted guests. Elder’s Junior Cadet Corps presented the colors at the event.
Superintendent Kent P. Scribner gave the commencement speech to the graduating class in Spanish. He told parents it’s never too early to start educating their children and that they are not only their child’s first teacher but their most important one.
“I’m glad to know that each family here has made a commitment to instill a love for reading and recognizes the importance of reading so that your kids can be the most successful in this country,” Dr. Scribner said. “I applaud the efforts you have made to change your child’s lives in the long run through reading.
“I believe that the most important leadership starts at home … each kid in this place will follow your example.”
Parent University is a 13-week course with classes like Parent Leadership Academy, which allow parents to earn college credit from Tarrant County College.
The program is in its sixth year.
