TCU Awards Full STEM Scholarship to TABS Senior
Kayla Thomas, a senior at the Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences, did not intend on applying for the Texas Christian University STEM scholarship.
With just a few days remaining before the award deadline and some encouragement from her mother, she applied.
The decision was life-altering.
Recently, officials from TCU and TABS, as well as Kayla’s mother, surprised her at school with news that she was one of only five high school students in the nation to earn the award, and among the first recipients of the scholarship. The full four-year scholarship award totals approximately $260,000.
“I was not expecting to get it,” Kayla said. “I was really shocked more than anything. I just can’t believe it.”
Other scholarship benefits include a four-week summer enrichment program, internship and study abroad opportunities, funded undergraduate research, mentoring, tutoring and networking opportunities with professors and STEM professionals. Click here for more information on the STEM Scholar Program.
It’s been Kayla's dream to attend college, and TCU was among her top choices, she said.
“I wanted to cry but I couldn’t because I was so shocked,” Kayla said of the award. “I’ve never experienced anything like this before.
“It’s really a blessing.”
Kayla intends to study biology and take a pre-medicine track throughout her undergraduate studies. She aspires to one day become a pediatric or neonatal surgeon.
