FWISD Football Preview WEEK 3: South Hills stars rolling into district play
After a tough Week 1, Chris Clayton and South Hills bounced back in a big way and plan to ride that momentum into Friday night’s District 3-5A opener with Saginaw. Kickoff between the Scorpions (1-1) and Rough Riders (2-0) is set for 7 p.m. at Clark Stadium.
Clayton authored one of the area’s top performances last week with 233 yards rushing and a touchdown in South Hill’s 43-6 non-district (ND) win over O.D. Wyatt. The sophomore running back did his damage on just 16 carries, averaging a healthy 14.6 yards with each tote.
Not to be outdone was quarterback John Vela, who passed for 233 yards and a touchdown. The three-year starter also ran for three more scores as South Hills rebounded from 49-6 loss to Cleburne the previous week.
In addition to picking up their first win, the Scorpions go into Week 3 with good memories of their last meeting with Saginaw. South Hills claimed a wild 63-41 victory in the district opener last year.
Also, of note this week, undefeated Diamond Hill-Jarvis attempts to reach 3-0 in its Saturday night date with North Side in the fifth annual in-district rivalry Battle of the Boot match at Farrington Field. Arlington Heights begins 3-5A action Friday night against Brewer at Handley Field. O.D. Wyatt celebrates homecoming against Trimble Technical at Clark Stadium on Saturday.
