Fort Worth ISD Students Win Fuzzy’s Taco Culinary Competition

Two Fort Worth ISD seniors from South Hills High School are winners in the Fuzzy’s Taco Culinary Competition and will have an original culinary creation featured on an upcoming menu. Fatima Olalde and Jessica Servin, under the direction of their culinary instructor, Chef Jeff Glick, created a winning recipe called “MAC ATTACK with Mango Taco.” Their unique recipe will debut as part of the new Fuzzy’s Taco Shop’s “Kids Fit Menu” featuring healthy food choices that taste great.

Chef Glick said, “These two young ladies worked well as a team to create a unique Macaroni and Cheese dish that was imaginative, low calorie, low fat, and great tasting that wowed the judges.”

The tasty “MAC ATTACK with Mango Taco” is a Queso Mac & Cheese with black bean salsa, choice of shredded chicken or special ground beef and shredded cheese, served with a sweet pancake shell filled with grilled mango, cinnamon, whipped cream.

The students’ winning dish will soon debut on the Fuzzy’s Taco Shop menu at the Bryant Irvin location. This location has been selected to launch the Kids Fit Menu, which will include recipes from students in other districts as well. The sneak peek and soft launch of these new menu items begins July 19 and goes through the rest of the week, with a full menu rollout the following week.

Stacy Schwartz, general manager at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop at the Bryant Irvin location, said “I am so excited that our Fort Worth location was chosen to reveal these new menu items to the community. The new menu items will expand to additional locations in the DFW area.  Then, they will be offered regionally and soon to the rest of the Fuzzy’s Taco Shop locations in the nation.”

This competition to create tasty and healthy menu items for kids began in April and is sponsored by Medical City Children’s Hospital (MCCH). Through their “kids teaching kids” program, MCCH creates partnerships with Texas ProStart culinary high school students to create kid-friendly recipes that are fun to make, fun to eat, and that feature fruits and vegetables.  They pair an interested restaurateur with Pro-Start students to begin the culinary challenge.

The Kids Fit Menu Challenge engages top culinary high school students with local restaurant partners, such as Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, in creating “Kids Fit Meals.” This partnership program gives students hands-on, real-world experience as they conduct the research and development for new menu items and writing recipes. Students also learn from a registered dietician about nutrition, reading food labels, and calculating nutrition facts for their recipes to ensure that their meals meet the Kids Fit nutrition criteria.
