Southwest High School Band Advances to State Finals

The Southwest High School Raider Band will compete for the 2017 State Marching Band Championship.

On Saturday, October 28, the band finished fourth in the University Interscholastic League Area B 5A Marching Band Contest, punching its ticket to the state finals next week in San Antonio. This is the band’s third consecutive trip to the state finals and its fourth overall.

The 5A state marching contest is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Alamodome.

Southwest High is expected to perform at 4:15 p.m. The top 10 bands from the preliminary round will advance to final round.

Elated Southwest High School Band members celebrated news that they would return to state with high-fives, hugs, cheers and some tears.

“I’m proud of what you did today,” said Jeff DeMaagd, head band director, to his students in a congratulatory message Saturday. “You guys made amazing, smart, intelligent choices. Some people put under pressure back down, but you guys step up your game, and I am so proud that we get to showcase you on the highest, biggest state contest in all of Texas.

“It’s going to be amazing and incredible.”

Other Fort Worth ISD bands that participated in Saturday’s area completion included Carter-Riverside, Trimble Tech and Western Hills High Schools.

Marching bands from classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A will compete for the state title this year. Class 4A and 6A state finals are held in alternating years.
