Three students from North Side High School will join top culinary arts students from DFW who are enrolled in the Texas ProStart program in a challenge to create Kids Fit meals around a restaurant concept. They will compete at the Kids Fit Menu Live Demo Event and Invitational, which is part of Medical City Children’s Hospital kids teaching kidsSM program. The event will be Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 2 – 6 p.m. The North Side team competes at 2:15 p.m.

Where: Trinity Groves, 3015 Gulden Lane, Dallas, 75212

The North Side students are Noah Jasso, Milagro Rios and Juanita Barajas, under the direction of instructor Chef Paul Philpot. The team will perform a live demonstration of their Kids Fit Menu creation in front of the culinary staff from On The Border restaurant. The judging panel will provide verbal and written feedback about their entry, which will be designed to make kids food fun and healthy. North Side is one of 17 student teams demonstrating their culinary skills before numerous restaurant judging panels at the event.

The Kids Fit Menu Invitational is designed to educate TexasProStart® program students about basic nutrition principles and engage them with the restaurant industry in creating healthy dining options for kids. For almost a decade, the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association has worked in partnership with Medical City to provide a program that encourages healthy eating habits among youth. The association is working with culinary arts students to help form and shape today's modern menus by creating and encouraging healthy eating habits.

Students participating in the Kids Fit Menu Invitational will receive instruction from Medical City Healthcare dietitians on nutrition criteria for Kids Fit meals, reading food labels and calculating nutrition facts for recipes. Students will use their culinary knowledge, skills and creativity to design and demonstrate preparation of one Kids Fit Meal. Students will write recipes and calculate the nutrition facts for their meal. Each student team will include two students in a culinary role and one student serving as team manager.

The North Side team will check in one hour before their competition time to receive their instructions. They will compete for 70 minutes, clean their equipment and dishware in 20 minutes and then check out. The restaurant judging panel will sample the meal and provide verbal feedback and written feedback. The restaurant panel will judge the meal on appearance and presentation, taste and the feasibility of reproducing it for their own operation. Restaurateurs will announce all the winning meals within 10 days of the demonstration event.

This event is aligned with the Fort Worth ISD mission of preparing all students for success in college, career and community leadership. It provides students with valuable hands-on, real-world experience as they work to write recipes and create a meal that is kid-friendly, fun to make, fun to eat and features nutritional fruits and vegetables.

Medical City Children’s Hospital is hosting this event in partnership with the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association. Gordon Food Service is the presenting sponsor for the Kids Fit Menu Live Demo Event and Invitational.
