FWISD's Reading with Barbers Initiative Receives Governor's Volunteer Award

Governors Award-RWB

Fort Worth ISD’s Division of Equity and Excellence Reading with Barbers initiative is being recognized with the Partners in Education Award at the 36th annual Governor’s Volunteer Awards this October.

Reading with Barbers is one of 10 Governor’s Volunteer Award honorees recently announced by Texas first lady Cecilia Abbott and OneStar Foundation. Honorees are being recognized at a reception at the Texas Governor’s Mansion next month.  The annual Governor’s Volunteer Award is administered by OneStar Foundation, a Texas nonprofit that promotes volunteer efforts and community service across the state, and it recognizes individuals, businesses and organization for their volunteer efforts.

Reading with Barbers provides grassroots, neighborhood support of the FWISD’s elementary literacy initiative – called 100 X 25 FWTX – which sets a goal of 100-percent of third graders reading on grade level or above by the year 2025. Created by FWISD’s ISD’s Division of Equity and Excellence, Reading with Barbers aims to help students ages 4-14 maintain and improve their reading skills in a safe and trusted community space – the local barbershop. Equity and Excellence and provides books, bookshelves, training and event planning while the volunteer barbers serve as role models and mentors for children. Reading begins once the children walk through the door and select a book, continuing through the haircut. Barbers are there to guide the reading process, engaging with their young clientele over content and comprehension.

The Partners in Education Award “award recognizes an individual or group that demonstrates measurable impact on a recognized need within a public, charter or parochial school(s) … [with] innovative and/or informed or evidence-based solutions to further educational goals for students,” according to the OneStar Foundation website.

“Texans are generous by nature,” Mrs. Abbott said in a recent statement. “And I am so honored to celebrate the amazing generosity of all the awardees. By selflessly giving of their hearts and hands, their time and treasure, they have helped to make the future of Texas even brighter.”
