FWISD Board of Education Approves Boundary Realignment
On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, the Fort Worth ISD Board of Education approved the first major District-wide school boundary changes in more than 20 years, repairing “broken” feeder patterns that, in one example, had students who attend a single middle school continuing on to as many as three different high schools.
The Board vote is the culmination of work by the District’s Facility Master Plan Committee, established by the Board in 2015 to support the District’s mission of preparing all students for success in college, career and community leadership. Pyramid re-alignment and subsequent boundary and attendance zone changes are now at the forefront.
“We know that students are best positioned for success when they are part of a coherent school feeder pattern,” said Superintendent Kent P. Scribner. “Coherent school feeder patterns are good not only for academics but also for athletics, extracurricular activities, fine arts, band, life-long friendships as a result of a stronger, long-term social relationship.
“We are talking about the creation and strengthening of school communities.”
Teachers and campus leaders are better able to positively impact a group of students when they are operating within the vertical alignment of a coherent feeder pattern. We want teachers and staff members to share their experiences – and their knowledge – about students and their families from elementary school to middle school to high school to ensure their success.
Almost six months ago, Superintendent Kent P. Scribner and his leadership team began a series of town hall meetings – 26 in all – across the District discussing school boundaries. The complexity and challenge of explaining proposed changes to alignments that have been in place for many years was evident at these meetings. But the meetings served the dual purpose of not only explaining possible changes, but also gathering valuable insight from parents, staff and community members.
Information regarding each presentation can be found on the District’s Let’s Talk School Community Forums page.
With the boundary changes:
- Overcrowding, demographic shifts and equity for students will be addressed.
- Underutilization, improve operational effectiveness and efficiency with rightsizing and/or repurposing can be considered and resolved.
- Boundary changes will address existing feeder pattern splits and/or overlaps.
- High school programs will align with programs offered in feeder schools.
- Students in the same pyramid will move through the educational system together, creating a sense of community, one point of contact, one point of responsibility.
- Programs of Choice, STEM, Montessori, applied learning and single sex campuses can be expanded into each pyramid, eliminating waiting lists for these sought-after programs.
- Implementation of the changes will occur in phases, beginning in the fall of 2020 and continuing through the 2023-24 school year. This roll-out plan allows for monitoring and the development of more quality options for students and families. The proposed changes can be adjusted as needed based on enrollment trend, academic programs and facility needs.
A complete list of proposed pyramid changes is listed below.
