Fort Worth ISD Celebrates 2019-2020 Scholar Athletes
Annually, the Fort Worth ISD honors its Scholar Athletes at a Board of Education meeting in May. Because of the disruption of the spring semester, the public recognition of those students was not possible. However, the District is now honoring their achievements by sharing their names, sports and grade point averages on our website at www.fwisd.org .
Originally called the Academic Athlete Award, the Fort Worth ISD Scholar Athlete recognition was originated in 1984 by then-Board Trustee Dr. T.A. Sims. Dr. Sims saw a need to recognize outstanding athletes for their work in the classroom as well as on the playing field.
Now in its 36th year, the Scholar Athlete program recognizes student athletes from each middle and high school in the District. Two students – one male and one female –are chosen on the basis of their grade point average (GPA) and their athletic participation, with an emphasis on the GPA. The criteria for the award are that the individuals recognized should have the highest GPA amongst all student athletes of their gender, at grade level, at a campus.
Complete lists of Scholar Athletes for high school and middle school are attached to this news release.
