10th Annual Problem Solving Competition Set For May 19
Here’s the challenge: Make 24 out of the following numbers – 8,7,4 and 5. You can use all four numbers only once, and you may add, subtract, multiply and divide to solve the problem. The solution may not be as easy as you think.
The Fort Worth ISD Math Department is gearing up for its 10th annual Problem Solving Competition, and this is just one of the multiple challenges competitors will be tasked with solving.
Middle school teams from across the District will meet at O.D. Wyatt High School, 2400 E. Seminary Drive, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, to participate in various mathematics challenges that task students with applying math to unique situations. Annually, more than 150 students participate in the contest.
District officials say the competition is designed to build student confidence and success with using math concepts learned throughout the year in class and daily occurrences.
“The Problem Solving Competition provides an opportunity for more students to participate in an extracurricular math event that shares our District’s vision of igniting a passion for learning,” said Shannon Hernandez, FWISD secondary mathematics director. “All participating students will communicate about mathematics using informal language, logical reasoning, and applying mathematics to solve problems connected to everyday experiences and activities in and outside of school.”
For more details, contact your child’s math teacher or Lowanna Jones, a secondary core curriculum and innovation coordinator, at 817-814-2548 or via email at Lowanna.jones@fwisd.org.
Did you figure out the math solution? Here’s how:
Step 1: 4+8= 12
Step2: 7-5= 2
Step 3: 12x2= 24
Hope to see you at this year’s Problem Solving Competition.
