YWLA Student Among EECU Scholarship Recipients

Sonia Diaz, a student at Fort Worth Independent School District’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy, is among eight North Texas seniors who are the recipients of college scholarships awarded by credit union, EECU.

The graduating senior was recognized with one of eight $5,000 Glenn Mandeville Memorial Scholarships at the annual EECU meeting, March 27. Upon graduating, Sonia plans to study civil engineering.

The credit union awarded a total of $40,000 in scholarships this year to students from public and private schools in Tarrant and Johnson counties. The award honors a former EECU board member and Fort Worth educator.

“EECU has a deep commitment to education,” said Lonnie Nicholson, EECU president and chief executive officer, in a statement.  “Higher education can be an essential springboard to building productive lives, but unfortunately, college costs also can be a significant burden.  EECU is proud to be able to recognize and financially assist these deserving students, and we wish them tremendous success in their academic pursuits.”

In more than 30 years, EECU has awarded more than $500,000 scholarships to area students. EECU considers a student’s academic and attendance record, community service, extracurricular leadership activities, references and an essay when selecting its scholarship recipients.
