LeaderKids Community Service Project Benefits FWISD Leadership Academy at Como Elementary
Fort Worth, Texas - Fifty eighth-grade students participating in the LeaderKids program joined forces with 35 community volunteers, Tuesday, April 17, to complete a service beautification project for Fort Worth ISD’s Leadership Academy at Como Elementary.
LeaderKids is a program of the Leadership Fort Worth and was created in 1995. Two eighth-grade students from each FWISD middle school are selected each fall by counselors and participate throughout the year, with the culmination of a service project each spring. The students explore leadership practices, education and career opportunities, practice teamwork and collaboration and learn project management skills. All of the completed projects are designed by the students, with guidance and approval from the community volunteers, project experts and campus administrators.
Volunteers included student mentors from the Texas Christian University Leadership Center, Fidelity Investments, Leadership Fort Worth, community artists, FWISD art teachers, and other community stakeholders. The group completed wooden benches, an outdoor classroom, an outside mural on the gym depicting the school mascot, a reading nook with an emphasis on the enjoyment of reading and another highlighting the importance of higher education.
The day ended with a celebration of accomplishment, dinner, and a tour of the completed projects for those who visited the campus. The middle school students planned for success, learned how to build consensus, and recognized the value of partnerships, all for the benefit of FWISD elementary students.
