FWISD Observes Dolores Huerta and César Chávez Day of Service March 27

Honor the legacies of civil and human rights advocates César Chávez and Dolores Huerta by participating in Fort Worth ISD’s (FWISD) 2023 Day of Service activities. First, you’ll want to join the District for an elementary reading marathon March 24. Then, on March 27, high school students, FWISD staff who are not working for their staff development day, families and community volunteers are invited to join the District in cleaning up community parks.

Register here to volunteer March 27. Multiple volunteer slots are available, but space is limited.

The FWISD Family Action Center is working closely with the City's Keep Fort Worth Beautiful and the Fort Worth Parks and Recreation departments on this initiative. This includes one project in each of the nine FWISD Districts. The goal is to reflect Mr. Chavez and Ms. Huerta’s vision of promoting service to others, knowledge, acceptance of all people and respect for life, the environment and education for all.

Minors who register must be accompanied by an adult guardian. Further instructions will be provided through a confirmation email. The events will happen, rain or shine. Volunteers will be able to select the location and shift of their choice. Upon arrival at their chosen site, volunteers should look for blue pop-up tents to sign in and receive further instructions and supplies.

Ahead of the March 27 Day of Service, first through fifth grade students from FWISD’s César Chávez and Dolores Huerta elementary schools will honor the civil and human rights advocates with books and words. In collaboration with a community advocate, the District is piloting its inaugural Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta Reading Marathon at the two schools March 24. The reading marathons will be live streamed on Facebook from each school.

Monday, March 27, is a student holiday and staff development day. In 2018, the Fort Worth ISD Board of Education passed a resolution establishing an annual District observance honoring Mr. Chávez and Ms. Huerta in March. The District observes the student holiday the Monday prior to Mr. Chávez’s March 31 birthdate.
