FWISD Participates in Catalyst Classroom Tour

Approximately 35 Tarrant County school leaders were in Fort Worth Wednesday, November 28 observing innovative learning taking place in classrooms at Fort Worth ISD’s Glencrest 6th Grade center.

The FWISD Learning Model was on display for school leaders to see how the program is being implemented at the sixth-grade center and how it’s engaging students. Internal and external school leaders will heard from Charles Carroll, FWISD's chief academic officer, before visiting eight classrooms and then hearing from a student panel about their interaction with the FWISD Learning Model.catalyst classroom

Fort Worth is one of three school districts – including Arlington and El Paso – that was part of education consultant Engage2Learn Catalyst Classroom tours this week.

“Catalyst Classrooms allows superintendents and district and campus leaders from across the nation to explore real-world examples of innovative learning environments,” according to the organization’s website.

In 2016, FWISD began developing a learning culture for prekindergarten to 12th-grade classrooms that is not only student-centered but prepares students with the critical tools needed for success and leadership. The result is the FWISD Learning Model which the District piloted in select schools the 2017-18 school year. Since then, the District has expanded the model’s implementation to multiple campuses.

The Learning Model is made up of four components – challenge, research and create, communicate, reflect and grow. Through the components, students develop shared ownership, leadership and collaboration skills.

Glencrest 6th Grade is an Improvement Required school based on the 2017-18 Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating. Through the classroom tours and student panel, school leaders will witness that FWISD’s Learning Model is not an innovative learning framework designed specifically for campuses that are doing well but all campuses, according to District Curriculum and Instruction officials.
