I.M. Terrell Academy Dancers Perform with Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra
Nine dancers from Fort Worth ISD’s I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and VPA recently performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at Bass Performance Hall.
The high school freshmen were part of four performances of CAMINOS del INKA, a 45-minute concert about South America’s Inca Trail which featured sounds from Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina. The shows are part of the FWSO Education Concert series and was performed for students ages 7 to 13, January 16 and 17.
The dancers were in one of the last movements of the concert and performed a Tango-inspired piece choreographed by I.M. Terrell Director of Dance Christen Williams. In a question-and-answer with the audience following the performances, the student dancers discussed what it’s like to be a dancer, how long they’re danced and their favorite dance styles, she said.
“It was an altogether great experience,” Ms. Williams said. “[It’s] the start of something way bigger than any of them could ever imagine. As a freshman to be able to perform on the Bass Hall stage was breathtaking for them.
“They were honored… it was special.”
The student dancers spent most of December and the first few days back from Winter Break preparing for their performances and had one rehearsal with the FWSO. The experience gave the students a real-world taste of life for a working dancer and has inspired some to pursue a career in dance, Ms. Williams said.
Up next, the I.M. Terrell dance program is preparing to perform and host the District’s Dance Showcase in February, Ms. Williams said. A dance ensemble showcase is slated for April and dance concert is scheduled for May. Major contemporary dance artists Bridget Moore, founder and artistic director of Dallas-based B. Moore Dance, and Joy Bollinger, artistic director of Bruce Wood Dance in Dallas, are slated to choreograph the spring shows, Ms. Williams said.
