Waverly Park ES Hosts Wishtree Celebration
Fort Worth ISD’s Waverly Park Elementary School culminated a monthlong reading initiative with a Wishtree Celebration Wednesday, May 1.
For the last month, Waverly Park students have read the book, Wishtree by Newberry Medal-winning author Katherine Applegate. It’s the story of a community that gathers annually on May 1 at to adorn a neighborhood oak tree with their dreams and wishes.
Wednesday’s brought the Waverly Park community together to write their dreams and wishes on pieces of fabric, that will hang from the red oak tree on the school’s front lawn just outside the campus library. The event recognized parent volunteers, included a discussion about the book and much more.
Waverly Park’s Wishtree reading initiative aligns with Fort Worth ISD’s goal that 100% of third-graders are reading on or above grade level by the year 2025. Superintendent Kent P. Scribner is partnering with Mayor Betsy Price, BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead the community-wide Read Fort Worth initiative. Anel Mercado serves as the executive director. This cradle-to-career strategy puts childhood literacy front and center and aligns the resources of the Fort Worth ISD with the city’s business sector, city leaders, higher education, nonprofit organizations, the faith-based community as well as educators and parents. Childhood literacy can determine success in all subjects for years to come, including math and science.
