FWISD JROTC Cadets Meet Medal of Honor Recipients
U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor recipients recently spoke with Fort Worth ISD JROTC cadets and instructors about citizenship, leadership and teamwork.
Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Robert M. Patterson and retired 1st Sgt. Allen J. Lynch were speakers at the Medal of Honor Character Development seminar, hosted Friday, October 4, at North Side High School. Approximately 60-70 JROTC cadets and students from North Side, Trimble Tech and South Hills high schools participated in the program which is sponsored by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
Both speakers were awarded the Medal of Honor for their service in the Vietnam War. CSM Patterson and 1SGT Lynch both served in the U.S. Army and were awarded the Medal of Honor in 1968 and 1967, respectively.
Since its founding during the Civil War, the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, has been presented to approximately 3,500 honorees.
CSM Patterson and 1SGT Lynch spoke with Fort Worth ISD students about their childhoods, their obstacles and mistakes made throughout their careers. They encouraged attendees to challenge themselves, think of others and to set a foundation for future success. The two men also answered questions and took photos with cadets.
The seminar is inspired by Medal of Honor values -- courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship and patriotism. Lessons and videos, which are part of the program, teach students that ordinary people can meet great challenges and make the world around them a better place. Each lesson highlights skills such as writing, collaboration and critical thinking.
Two days prior to the seminar, it was announced that Arlington, Texas will be home to the National Medal of Honor Museum, which will tell the story of those recipients. The $150 million facility is slated to open its doors to the public in 2024 in Arlington’s entertainment district.
