Paschal Junior Wins Chemistry State Title
(Thursday, May 13, 2021) -- Zachary Jacobus, a junior at Fort Worth ISD’s Paschal High School, is the UIL state chemistry champion.
He finished first in chemistry at the 6A University Interscholastic League Academic tournament earlier this month at Brock High School. He’s believed to be the first academic state champion from the District in five years.
Recently, NBC 5 DFW (KXAS-TV) aired a story about Zachary. You may view it here.
The road to the chemistry state finals began with 250 schools and about 1,500 students competing in 6A. The Paschal team won at the District level and Zachary advanced to represent his school individually at the region and state levels. The state competition is generally held in Austin, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic multiple tournament pod sites were set up across the state. Students competed for the state title at these pod sites by written exam.
Zachary, an 11th grader, is taught chemistry by Davin Haley, whom he credits with sparking his interest in the subject. Andrew Brinker is the UIL academic coordinator at Paschal.
“All that time that’s he’s put into the chemistry has finally paid off with the state championship,” Mr. Brinker said.
This summer, Zachary has been invited to participate in the Welch’s Scholar Summer Chemistry Program in Austin.
“The five-week program immerses students … in the intellectual atmosphere of working with practicing academic chemists in and out of their labs,” according to The Welch Foundation website. “Students participate in real-life research projects under the supervision of experienced research chemists.”
“He’s all aces,” said Mr. Haley of his student.
