100+ Parents to Graduate from Parent University
More than 100 parents will be recognized this week for completing weeks of parenting courses through the Fort Worth ISD Parent University program.
A combined Parent University graduation is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at J.P. Elder Middle School, 709 N.W. 21st St. to honor 108 parents with students at Diamond Hill, M.G. Ellis, W.J. Turner and Manuel Jara elementary schools. Superintendent Kent P. Scribner will be joined by FWISD school chiefs, Board of Education Trustee Jacinto Ramos, a Texas Education Agency representative, a representative from Mayor Betsy Price’s office and many others for the event.
Over the course of 13 weeks, parents completed five parenting courses offered at Manuel Jara Elementary. Among the courses completed was Parent Leadership Academy, which includes an earned credit from Tarrant County College.
“Years of research show that when parents are involved in school, their students have higher grades, better test scores, higher graduation rates; better attendance; higher reading levels; better self-esteem and decreased use of drugs and alcohol,” said Manuel Jara Elementary Principal Marta Plata. “If we empower the parents, we empower the students and change lives.”
This is the fifth year for Parent University.
Research shows parent involvement is critical not only to academic achievement but impacts a child’s motivation.
