Nearly 100 Books Donated at Laces, Layups and Literacy Event
Nearly 100 children’s books were donated at the second annual Laces, Layups and Literacy event.
Attendees were asked to dress in professional attire, such as a suit, jacket, tie, business suit, heels and dress shoes or to donate a new children’s book at the door to support FWISD's 100 X 25 FWTX literacy initiative in exchange for free admission to an Eastern Hills and Dunbar high school boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball doubleheader.
The Eastside Alliance Community Partnership and Historic Stop Six Initiative- sponsored event, held on Monday, January 29, brings the community together in support of the 20 Fort Worth ISD schools within the Eastern Hills High School and Dunbar High School attendance zones.
An estimated 750 to 1,000 people attended the gathering at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.
“We were thrilled with the turnout from the community and thought it was a great success,” said Charles Hodges, Eastside Alliance Community Partnership director. “Three years in, it’s going strong and growing.”
The District’s 100 X 25 FWTX initiative sets the goal that 100 percent of third-graders will be reading on grade level or above by the year 2025. Superintendent Kent P. Scribner is partnering with Mayor Betsy Price and BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead the community-wide Read Fort Worth initiative. This collective impact strategy engages parents, grandparents, and caregivers as well as volunteers from the city’s business sector, higher education, non-profit organizations, and the faith-based community.
The first Laces, Layups and Literacy competition, previously known as “100Men in Suits,” was held in 2016 at Billingsley Field House and brought out more than 100 community members in business attire to visibly demonstrate their support for all students at Eastern Hills and Dunbar high schools.
