YWLA Senior Receives Four-Year Scholarship to Attend TCU
Congratulations to Mercedez Saldana, a senior at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, who was presented with the Student Engagement and School Completion Scholarship, Thursday, May 3.
The Texas Christian University/ Fort Worth ISD award offers Mercedez a four-year scholarship valued at $260,000. The scholarship also allows her to study abroad anywhere in the world.
Mercedez was overwhelmed with emotion as Dr. Anita Perry, FWISD director of academic advisement, and Timeka Gordon, director of the Community Scholars Program at TCU, presented her with the scholarship.
“You don’t know how much this means to me. Thank you so much,” a tearful Mercedez said.
Mercedez is the latest FWISD senior awarded a full-ride scholarship to TCU through the university’s Community Scholars Program.
Other FWISD students recently awarded scholarships through the Community Scholars program include:
Dunbar High School: Nayeli Frias, Jocelyn Mays, Laurent Shumbusha;
North Side High School: Youanna Ibrahim and Antonio Ramos;

Christa Engel, a senior at the Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences, was recently awarded the Hispanic Women’s Network Scholarship, a full-ride award also presented by the Community Scholars Program.
The Community Scholars program, established in 2000 by the TCU Chancellor’s Council on Diversity, is designed to increase diversity at the university. Annually more than $6 million in scholarship offers are awarded to students from the program’s 13 participating high schools, including schools in the Arlington, Dallas and DeSoto school districts.
Eligible students for the program must be accepted to TCU and attend one of the participating high schools.
Students accept the scholarship by signing a contract. They must maintain a certain grade point average, attend academic workshops and participate in community service to retain the scholarship.
Visit the District’s College and Career Readiness webpage to learn more about the scholarship awards FWISD students can apply for.
