FWISD Is Hiring for Summer School
Duy Phan is a someone who can’t sit still. He enjoys being productive, he says.
It’s one of the reasons the Eastern Hills High School math teacher, has signed up to teach summer school the last four years and hopes to teach once again this year. He said that it keeps his teaching skills sharp and allows him to teach areas of math he may not typically teach during the regular school year.
“It’s always an opportunity to learn something new,” Mr. Phan said.
The Fort Worth ISD is still accepting applications from District employees interested in teaching or working summer school.
Eligible teachers must:
- Be current FWISD employees and returning as full-time teachers the 2018-2019 school year
- Be certified in the area assigned to teach for the summer
- Demonstrate strong instructional skills and knowledge of content
- Have ability to build positive relationships with stakeholders
- Apply for the summer school teaching position through Human Capital Management
- Be approved by campus leadership
Most teacher positions pay $25 an hour, and there’s opportunities to work half or full-day schedules.
Patsy Blake has taught summer school with the District since 2005. The FWISD Homebound math teacher, like Mr. Phan, said that summer school allows her to “stay abreast” of her teaching skills. But, she said, it’s also an opportunity to make herself available to students, who may not have grasped a concept during the regular school year become successful in the summer session. She said she enjoys witnessing that “light bulb” moment with students.
Summer school, Ms. Blake said, is also a time to connect with teachers from other schools. In collaborating with other teachers, she said she’s been able to share and glean from others on how to present a lesson. It’s an opportunity “to network and to have things to put into your repertoire,” Ms. Blake said.
The District expects to hire more than 400 summer school teachers this year. Educators are encouraged to apply by Tuesday, May 15 because principals fill summer school positions fairly quickly.
A majority of the summer school sessions begin in June and continue through July, with two days off to observe Independence Day.
