FWISD to Host Kickoff for Summer Meals Program
The Fort Worth ISD Child Nutrition Services Department, in partnership with the Texas Hunger Initiative, Blue Zones Project and Texas Wesleyan University football, is hosting a Summer Meals Kickoff event ,June 13.
Area children and teens are invited to attend the event, slated for 10 a.m. June 13 at Dunbar High School, 5700 Ramey Ave., which offers health and nutrition resources. The District will offer free breakfasts and lunches to children 18 years of age or under Monday through Thursday, June 5- June 27, 2019.
“For many kids, summertime means food, friends and fun. For families who count on school breakfast and lunch, however, the summer months can be stressful and family food budgets have to be stretched even further,” Catherine Nicholson, regional director for the Texas Hunger Initiative-Dallas, said in a recent statement. “During the summer, kids can also lose out on multiple, months of learning and physical activity that they would normally get at school.”
Multiple sites across the Fort Worth ISD are among 200 Tarrant County facilities offering free meals to children under 18 this summer. The meals are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and follow USDA nutrition guidelines.
The program is open to children under 18 who wish to receive a free meal and does not require enrollment in any summer program.
