Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. Builds Partnership with Maudrie M. Walton Elementary through Junior M.I.N.T.S. Volunteers
(Tuesday, November 24, 2020) -- When burglars robbed and set fire to the Maudrie M. Walton Elementary school library in the middle of the night in late September, volunteers from the Junior League of Fort Worth’s Junior M.I.N.T.S. program sprang into action in the aftermath to bring the library back to life. They launched a virtual book drive, “Clear the List to Fill Shelves,” creating an Amazon Wish List of 600 books for the Walton students. To date, generous donors have purchased 200 books that Amazon is delivering to Walton, which is great news because the school library renovation is underway.
The Junior League of Fort Worth, Inc. (JLFW) has a long-standing partnership with Fort Worth ISD schools through the Junior M.I.N.T.S. program. M.I.N.T.S. stands for Mentoring, Inspiring, Tutoring and Supporting. Each year, the Provisionals, as volunteers are called, provide valuable support to teachers in the classroom, students through mentoring, families by facilitating educational nights and supplementing much needed supplies and uniforms.
JLFW Provisionals support and volunteer at Eastern Hills Elementary, Western Hills Primary, Western Hills Elementary and Young Women’s Leadership Academy. Each school has its own coordinator, who establishes relationships with the staff. Walton Elementary is a new school for the Provisionals this year, and they wasted no time making an impact on campus.
In addition to the library book drive, the 20 Provisionals at Walton have
- donated $2,000 worth of masks for adults and students, and gloves
- volunteered on a recent Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to decorate hallway bulletin boards and help teachers set up their classrooms
- created pencils with individual handwritten notes of encouragement attached
- donated a water refill machine;
- provided 400 refillable water bottles;
- delivered 400 backpacks;
- donated 300 frisbees and pedometers; and
- purchased and created yard signs to maintain and show Jets pride in the community
As members of the Junior League, Dr. Christina Turner Hanson, principal, and Ms. Nedra Robinson, data clerk and campus partner coordinator, have welcomed the JLFW Provisionals as their new partner and are thinking creatively about new ways they can be involved. There are few on-campus volunteer activities due to Covid-19, but there is always a place for someone who wants to help. One morning, a Provisional arrived at Walton by mistake, thinking it was a different campus. Dr. Hanson put the volunteer to work in the carpool line, to the delight of everyone, including the volunteer. “The Junior M.I.N.T.S. will do anything and everything to help students, teachers, and families,” said Dr. Hanson.
