FWISD Repurposes Portable Building to Address Community Need
The Fort Worth ISD (FWISD) is teaming up with the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. to repurpose an unused campus portable building into the Morningside Middle School & Community Resource Center. The Center will house hygiene items and serve as an educational hub offering health and wellness advice, employment resources, and financial literacy courses for students and adults.
The service project is a collaborative effort of the Morningside community, volunteers, and community-based organizations, including the City of Fort Worth, DIG Contracting, Community Frontline, and Pragmatic Prodigies.
Join the effort Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Morningside Middle School, 2751 Mississippi Ave., as volunteers create Period Packs for young girls containing educational materials designed to guide them through their menstrual cycle with confidence.
Representatives from the FWISD, City of Fort Worth, Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the NAACP are scheduled to attend. FWISD students and their parents are welcome!
Be sure to stick around to see Morningside Middle School students create a mural identifying the space as a community resource center. The mural was sketched by Ruben Orozco of DNZDesigns and will be completed by sorority members, students, staff, community leaders, and elected officials.
“I believe in the community schools’ approach, which is rooted in the belief that strong connections between the school system and local resources benefit ALL students, families, and communities,” said FWISD Morningside Middle School Principal Monica Garrett. “It is my vision to bridge the gap between the school and community by working together to meet the needs of our families, which over time will influence student achievement.”
