FWISD Celebrates National Native American Heritage Month
Pubished 11/09/2022
The Fort Worth ISD is celebrating the rich history and traditions of its 326 Native American students representing 81 tribes at the “November is- Native American Heritage Month” program Saturday, Nov. 12. Festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. at Briscoe Elementary School, 2751 Yuma Ave.
Now in its second year, this free event hosted by the Briscoe Elementary Parent Action Team and the FWISD American Indian Education Program, introduces the public to Native attire, music, instruments, dance, food, and much more. Attendees are invited to participate in multiple activities celebrating Native American culture, including arts and crafts and Native story time. There will also be a book giveaway for students.
The celebration kicked off Tuesday, Nov. 8, when the FWISD Board of Education recognized the District’s Native population during its meeting.
FWISD’s American Indian Education Program provides the District’s Native population with academic, social, and emotional support through cultural education and referrals. Students participate in cultural field trips, a two-week summer camp focusing on cultural knowledge, and a summer reading initiative. The program, which is awarded federal funding from the Office of Indian Education to offer services to students under provisions of the Indian Education Formula Grant program, seeks to ensure Native students complete high school prepared for a postsecondary education.
National Native American Heritage Month, observed throughout the United States in November, acknowledges and celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of this country’s Native Americans.
