This Week in Athletics: District Champions and Personal Records, FWISD Teams Excel
O.D. Wyatt soccer clinched the District 6-5A championship after beating North Side 1-0 last weekend. The Chaps followed up the district clinching win with a 5-4 win over Arlington Heights on penalty kicks. The goals were scored by Cristian Ramos, Wilson Monewa, Luis Bernal, Suhaybe Awil and Christian Alvarez. O.D. Wyatt improved to 19-1-2 on the season and 12-1 in district play. Arlington Heights is 14-6-2 and 7-6 in district play. Fort Worth ISD teams wrap up district play Friday night.
North Side soccer was riding a five-game winning streak before falling to O.D. Wyatt last week. The Steers are 12-4-3 and are in second place in District 6-5A. North Side won its Tuesday night game last week, defeating Arlington Heights 1-0 thanks to a goal on a free kick from Brandon Montero.
O.D. Wyatt’s run in the 2023 UIL Boys Basketball ended at the regional tournament in Wichita Falls. The Chaps fell to El Paso Chapin 69-68 in double overtime in the regional semifinal.
Myles Rigsby scored 28 points for O.D. Wyatt in his final high school game. Nicholas Gunter added 13 points for the Chaps in the loss. O.D. Wyatt advanced farther than any other FWISD team in the playoffs. As a result, the Chaps were well represented in the District 6-5A awards. Rigsby was named MVP of the district by the coaches. Gunter was named Defensive MVP of District 6-5A. Freshman Jaelon Germany was named District 6-5A Newcomer of the Year. DJ Thomas and Kwamir McBean made first-team all-district while Morgan Baldwin Jr. and Zay Williams made second-team all-district.
Western Hills wrapped up powerlifting season as Abby Moilan finished in fourth place at the regional meet. It was Moilan’s second year in a row to medal at the regional meet, and she was one of three FWISD girls to medal at the meet.
The Western Hills softball team put on a show in a dominating 22-4 win over Life Oak Cliff last week. An 11-run fourth inning eventually led to a run rule. The Lady Cougars were powered by Lauren Beckman, who got a hit in all five of her at-bats. Areli Nunez finished 3-4 at the plate, and Briana Moreno went 3-5 with an inside-the-park home run. Aly Cortez also recorded three hits in her five plate appearances.
North Side’s track team was well represented at the CowTown 5k. Janet Watson finished 18th out of 3,909 runners and third place out of 2,061 female runners. All 10 North Side students that ran in the CowTown 5k set personal best times.
Eastern Hills basketball coach Melvin Miller was named Fort Worth ISD Coach of the Year. Eastern Hills won District 9-4A with an 11-1 record and won a playoff game against Ferris in the bi-district round.
