SUMMARY: The Texas Book Festival’s Reading Rock Stars program is making its very first visit to Fort Worth ISD, Friday, February 9.
This hands-on literacy program, which brings nationally and internationally-recognized children’s authors and illustrators into Texas Title I schools and sends students home with a donated copy of the featured author’s book, is being introduced to students from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Rosemont Park Elementary School.
Author John August is presenting to fourth-and fifth-grade students; Roda Ahmed will present to second- and third-grade students; and Vanessa Brantley Newton will present to prekindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade students. After lunch the authors will conduct writing workshops with second- to fifth-grade students.
“Reading Rock Stars does more than bring nationally recognized authors to schools and provide books to students,” said Carter Cook, director of FWISD Library Media Services. “The day-long event celebrates reading and shows students that they are part of a greater community of readers.”
Rosemont Park Elementary was recently added to this program after a competitive selection process available to Title I schools in the Austin, Rio Grande Valley, Dallas and Houston areas. The program is supported by Meyerson Foundation and Reading Rock Stars has donated more than 85,000 books and coordinated nearly 400 author visits.
Fort Worth ISD’s initiative 100 X 25 FWTX sets a goal of 100 percent of third-graders reading on grade level or above by the year 2025. Superintendent Kent P. Scribner is partnering with Mayor Betsy Price and BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead the community-wide Read Fort Worth initiative. This collective impact strategy engages parents, grandparents, and caregivers as well as volunteers from the city’s business sector, higher education, non-profit organizations, and the faith-based community.
