YWLA Advances to North Texas FIRST Regionals
Another Fort Worth ISD team is headed to the North Texas FIRST Regional Championship next month.
The “The Dork Side” robotics team from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy advanced to the regional championship after finishing as a runner-up alliance team in the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier, hosted Saturday, January 20 at Hedrick Middle School in Lewisville.
The win was significant for YWLA, which made its very first appearance in a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science Technology (FIRST) competition. Also competing in the recent qualifier in Lewisville, which had 30 competing robotics teams, was the “CUJO Cougars,” a team from Western Hills High School, who finished 27th.
FIRST Tech Challenge teams in the seventh- through 12th-grade competitions create and program a robot with a basic kit of parts and keep record of their work in a notebook log.
YWLA is the latest FWISD team advancing to the region contest.
In addition to qualifying for the region championship, YWLA was awarded the Motivation Award for their outstanding notebook and Business or Strategic plan that identifies their future goals and the steps they will take to reach those goals.
“This is YWLA’s first time at FTC,” said David Saenz, FWISD’s executive director of the College and Career Readiness Department. “We are very proud of our young ladies!”
The North Texas FIRST Regional Championship is slated for February 10 in Wylie. Nearly 50 teams will compete for the chance at advancing to the FTC Super Regional Championship Match in Athens Georgia this March.
