FWISD Students Awarded $1.7 Million in Scholarship Offers at UNCF Event

Multiple Fort Worth ISD seniors were accepted into college and received combined college scholarship offers totaling more than $1.7 million at the UNCF Empower Me Tour, hosted Friday, September 28 at the Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus.

About 400 high school seniors from 17 Fort Worth ISD high schools participated in the free college-and-career-readiness road show that offers participants information about UNCF-member HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and University) institutions.uncfemt

Fort Worth was the first stop on the five-city nationwide tour that motivates high school and college students and recent college graduates “toward academic excellence, career success and personal responsibility,” according to the organization’s website. This year’s tour allowed participants to meet with HBCU recruiters and learn more about their institutions as well as take part in college preparation workshops with award-winning education experts as panelists.

Four FWISD students were each presented with $3,000 UNCF Empower Me Tour Merit Scholarships.  They are Princess Robinson and A’Nya Ivory of Trimble Tech High School, Fernando Bayona of Diamond Hill-Jarvis High School and Kevin Roberts of Young Men’s Leadership Academy.

Some of the scholarship honorees talked with UNCF about the challenges they’ve faced and what this scholarship means.

A senior with a 3.76 GPA, Kevin was once a student with chronic absences because of a lack of transportation. He had to “put in twice the work to catch up,” he told UNCF.

“This scholarship will help me tremendously,” he said in a UNCF statement.

Princess Robinson in a recent UNCF statement shared the benefits the scholarship brings to her also. Diagnosed with a brain tumor that left her visually impaired at age 13, Princess is now a senior with a 4.3 GPA.

“Winning this scholarship allows me to break the generational curse of being impoverished due to lack of education,” she said in the statement. “I was knocked down, my doctors ordered me to stay home, but I was determined not to be ‘average,’ so I went to school three days after my radiation treatments with the fire of tenacity.”

Students from FWISD’s Carter-Riverside, Arlington Heights, Diamond Hill-Jarvis, Dunbar, Eastern Hills, North Side, Polytechnic, Paschal, Trimble Tech, Southwest, O.D. Wyatt, Success, Young Women’s Leadership Academy, Young Men’s Leadership Academic, Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences, Marine Creek and TCC South Early Collegiate high schools participated in this year’s UNCF Empower Me Tour.
