North Side, Wyatt, Trimble Tech Students Clinch Top Honors in Annual Iron Chef Contest
Teams representing Fort Worth ISD’s North Side, O.D. Wyatt, and Trimble Tech High Schools brought home top honors at the fourth annual Iron Chef Competition, hosted by Fort Worth’s Community Food Bank, Thursday October 18, 2018.
Culinary students from the three schools were winners in the appetizer, entrée and dessert categories, respectively.
Fort Worth Iron Chef competition is similar to the “Chopped” cooking television show.
The dishes were judged by executive chefs Debbie Berry of Classic Q, Ryan Dawson of Circle T Ranch, and James Gaines of Reata restaurant.
Trimble Tech, winners of the appetizer category, are instructed by Chefs Natasha Bruton and Heather Kurima. The team prepared a Wonton tostada with pan seared pork loin and a mango pico de gallo. The team includes student cooks Guadalupe Sanchez, Elizabeth Canales and student team manager/volunteer, Adrian Ornelas.
Alfred Ramirez is instructor at O.D. Wyatt High, where students won the entrée category with a Swai fish marinated in Dr. Pepper and soy sauce grilled in butter and avocado oil with a dash of salt and pepper; yellow and green squash in Worcestershire sauce and apple vinegar grilled in butter seasoned with salt and pepper; greens cooked in chicken broth with garlic, green bell peppers and mushrooms; and a jalapeno creamy ranch dressing. The team includes student cooks Gerardo Posada, Ruben Garza and student team manager/volunteer, Lesly Huizar.
Instructed by Chef Stefani Lindstrom, the team from North Side High, including student cooks Jordan Cervantez, Rime Allam, and student team manager/volunteer Darius Robinson won the dessert category with a Puff pastry crisp with honey whipped cream and clementine zest, fresh blueberry citrus compote, garnished with toasted pine nuts and honey.
The competition is part of Community Food Bank’s Iron Chef Gala and Auction event, benefitting the organization, which serves as a food pantry and also offers education, programs and resources to needy North Texas families.
Sponsored by Tarrant County College, the Star-Telegram and FedEx Supply Chain, Fort Worth Iron Chef took place Thursday, October 19 at the TCC Trinity River Campus. Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald served as the event emcee.
