On March 25, the Fort Worth ISD will become the first school district in the state to honor the lives of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez with a school holiday.
However, the focus will be to allow students and others to spend a day in service to their community – not a “day off but rather a day on,” according to Board of Education Trustee Jacinto Ramos, Jr.
More than 62 percent of students in the Fort Worth district are Hispanic.
The Board voted last spring by resolution to establish the observance annually on the Monday before Chávez's birth date on March 31.
Plans are underway to develop opportunities for service on that day.
