North Hi Mount Elementary Partners with TCU for Sustainability Pilot Program
Fort Worth ISD’s North Hi Mount Elementary School will participate in a Sustainability Pilot Program supported by TCU’s Department of Nutritional Sciences and the Tarrant County Food Policy Council. The program will run February 19 through May 31. TCU Nutritional Sciences researchers, with support from North Hi Mount students, will complete waste audits at North Hi Mount Elementary.
Students will begin sorting their cafeteria waste into compost, share table items, recycling, and trash through the end of the semester. The share table items are safe foods that will not be discarded and shared with those who want it.
In order to prepare for this pilot, educators from the community, including those from TCU’s Department of Nutritional Sciences, Cowboy Compost, and the City of Fort Worth Code Compliance, will teach the students about food waste, composting, and recycling. Students will learn about various career opportunities, how to take care of the environment by reducing waste, and the scientific research process itself.
As part of the research component of the endeavor, parents, faculty and staff, and children are invited to complete surveys before and after the program. The study was approved by the TCU Institutional Review Board.
