South Hills Golfers Make School History
For the first time in school history, the boys golf team and a female golfer at Fort Worth ISD’s South Hills High School are advancing to the UIL Conference 5A Region 1 Golf Tournament.
Six students have qualified for region and they are:
Damina Luera, junior
Seth Munoz, sophomore
Isaac Guajardo, sophomore
Victor Sanchez, sophomore
Larry Nelloms, sophomore
Briana Carbajal, sophomore
The South Hills boys golf team finished second at the 6-5A District Golf Tournament April 3 and 4 at Pecan Valley Golf Course in Fort Worth to qualify for regionals, and Briana Carbajal becomes the first female golfer in school history qualifying for regionals.
The student-golfers, most of which are sophomores, have played golf three years or fewer. At least three of the golfers have participated in The First Tee program, and sophomores Victor Sanchez, Larry Nelloms and Briana Carbajal just began playing golf in January, according to their coach.
“The kids worked really hard this season and it paid off,” said Head Coach Jay Jordan. “I am extremely proud of my golf team… My kids have made great sacrifices and words cannot express my happiness.
“Second place in our district was a great accomplishment for my kids and South Hills HS.”
The region tournament will be hosted at Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock. Girls will compete April 22-23, and boys play April 24-25.
