O.D. Wyatt Culinary Program Makes Special Meal for John T. White Leadership Academy Students Excelling In Reading

Students in the culinary program at Fort Worth ISD’s O.D. Wyatt High School prepared a special meal for students achieving reading goals for the six weeks at Leadership Academy at John T. White Elementary School.readingcelebration1

The culinary students prepared a handmade, deep-dish pizza and lasagna lunch for 65 students at John T. White on Thursday, December 19. Every six weeks, the elementary school hosts the “A.R. Stars Celebration,” an accelerated reading celebration recognizing students who met their reading goals for the period.

This celebration was the first time John T. White has collaborated with O.D. Wyatt High, said Karla Patterson-Calloway, library media specialist at the academy. It was an experience that exposed elementary students to new food choices – for some, it was their first time eating pasta -- and the opportunities available to them at the high school level. Students from O.D. Wyatt answered questions about participating in the culinary program, which motivated some of the elementary students who one day hope to be where they are, Ms. Patterson-Calloway said.

“They were so excited to see high schoolers cooking,” she said. “It was great exposure for the students to get to talk to high school students.”readingcelebration2

The O.D. Wyatt culinary students visiting John T. White were led by Chef Alfred “Junior” Ramirez.

The “A.R. Stars Celebration”, keeps “students engaged as readers and provide frequent incentives for students to be recognized,” Ms. Patterson-Calloway said.

“Overall, the greatest benefit of the reading incentive program is to see students reading books that pique their interest and keep them engaged,” she said.
