Dear Fort Worth ISD Family:

Like everyone right now, we know you are needing to make decisions about how best to protect your family in this current national health crisis.

After consulting with Tarrant County Public Health and following many conversations with community leaders and other superintendents about the impact of the Coronavirus, we will close the Fort Worth ISD’s schools for at least two weeks through March 27.  

Further details will follow today and through the weekend.

We weighed many factors before coming to this decision.

We are aware the closing of our schools presents a challenge for families with small children and for parents who must now find ways to provide daycare.  We also know that many of our students depend on the healthy breakfast and lunch they eat at school. However, the risk of contracting COVID-19 – to children and family members or employees who have underlying health conditions --is far too great.

This will not be easy.  We are looking at ways to mitigate some of these circumstances. School administrators and teachers will continue to work to serve our children even though school is not in session.

We are asking our child nutrition services workers and our vendor SODEXO to find a way to make meals available on a “to go” to those who most need it.  We will share information about distribution of these meals later today and over the weekend.

We are also exploring online engagement activities.

Additionally, we are immediately canceling all travel for both students and employees as well as sporting events. We have also canceled our third annual Equity Summit, a much-anticipated and sold-out event that was to have taken place next Saturday, March 21 at Texas Wesleyan University. And, we will not encourage students and staff to gather in large groups related to the annual Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta Day of Service on Monday, March 23.

We will monitor this continually evolving situation and extend our hiatus if need be.  We are committed to making the best decisions for our students and our community.

Como todos en este momento, sabemos que necesitan tomar decisiones sobre la mejor manera de proteger a su familia en esta crisis de salud nacional.

Después de consultar con Tarrant County Public Health y seguir varias conversaciones con los líderes de la comunidad y otros superintendentes sobre el impacto del Coronavirus, extenderemos las vacaciones de primavera de Fort Worth ISD a lo menos dos semanas mas.

Consideramos muchos factores antes de tomar esta decisión.

Somos conscientes de que al cerrar nuestras escuelas presenta un desafío para las familias con niños pequeños y para los padres que ahora deben encontrar formas de servicios de guardería. También sabemos que muchos de nuestros estudiantes dependen del desayuno y almuerzo saludables que comen en la escuela. Sin embargo, el riesgo de contraer COVID-19 - a niños y familiares o empleados que tienen condiciones de salud - es demasiado grande.

Esto no será fácil. Estamos buscando formas de mitigar algunas de estas circunstancias. Los administradores y maestros de la escuelas continuarán trabajando para servir a nuestros niños a pesar de que la escuela no está en sesión.

Estamos pidiendo a nuestros empleados de servicios de nutrición que encuentren una manera de hacer que las comidas estén disponibles para aquellos que más lo necesitan. Compartiremos información sobre la distribución de estas comidas más tarde hoy y durante el fin de semana.

También estamos explorando actividades de participación en línea.

Además, cancelamos de inmediato todos los viajes para estudiantes y empleados, así como eventos deportivos. También hemos cancelado nuestra tercera Cumbre Anual de Equidad, un evento muy esperado y con entradas agotadas el próximo sábado 21 de marzo en la Universidad Texas Wesleyan. Y no animaremos a los estudiantes y al personal a reunirse en grandes grupos relacionados con el Día anual de César Chávez / Dolores Huerta el lunes 23 de marzo.

Monitorearemos esta situación que continua evolución y ampliaremos nuestro descanso si es necesario. Estamos comprometidos a tomar las mejores decisiones para nuestros estudiantes y nuestra comunidad.
