FWISD Division of Equity and Excellence to Present Community Conversation This Week
The Fort Worth ISD Division of Equity and Excellence will host a Community Conversation in Spanish this Thursday, October 15.
The virtual event begins at 5:30 p.m. on Equity and Excellence’s Facebook Live. “Una Conversación Comunitaria Con Nuestro Comité de Equidad Racial de Fort Worth ISD” will inform the community of the work the District’s Racial Equity Committee (REC) has engaged in the last four years.
Panelists will include FWISD Board of Education President Jacinto Ramos; Board Member Anael Luebanos and Racial Equity Committee members Aracely Chavez, Norma Garcia, Jonathan Perez and Mirgitt Crespo. Dr. Dorene Benavidez, FWISD Equity and Excellence executive director, will moderate the event.
Sherry Breed, FWISD Equity and Excellence chief, said the conversation not only informs the community about the REC’s work but allows them to ask questions of the committee and panelists and also offer feedback on what they believe should be the committee’s focus this academic year. The REC’s mission is to support the District’s goal of ensuring that all students are treated equitably and receive the resources needed to be successful.
“The FWISD Board of Trustees wanted to have a venue to hear from the community and empower them to share their thoughts on what students needed in order to be successful and address opportunities for growth for the District as it relates to serving our communities,” she said. “The REC has evolved in their work and I am proud to share that the Committee has been recognized for their work by receiving the Deshera Mack Family and Community Engagement and Empowerment Award for all of their collaborative work.”
