Doors Open Saturday for Northside Eats Food Pantry at Kirkpatrick Middle School

100 families expected to attend and begin shopping for free nutritious food

Fort Worth ISD (FWISD) Kirkpatrick Middle School is leading the way to help feed its Northside community. Students and staff proudly announce the grand opening and ribbon-cutting of their grocery-style Northside Eats food pantry located in the basement of their campus.

The ribbon-cutting begins at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind Kirkpatrick Middle School, 3201 Refugio Ave., in Fort Worth. Approximately 100 Northside families are expected to attend and will begin shopping for free nutritious food immediately following the ceremony.

The three-year effort is now a reality thanks to the staff at Kirkpatrick Middle School, a partnership with Tarrant Area Food Bank, and a kind donation made by the nonprofit organization Community Meals.

Shoppers will enter the Northside Eats food pantry front door and see a colorful mural painted by art students from Kirkpatrick and Texas Christian University. Students also helped install shelving units, unbox merchandise, and stock pantry shelves. Next year, a student organization will be created to lead the food pantry effort.

The grocery store-style food pantry will be open three days a week with help from Kirkpatrick parents and Tarrant Area Food Bank volunteers, with extended hours two Saturdays per month. Adjusted summer hours of operation to be announced soon.

“We wanted to create a safe place where families could get the essentials they need to support their families. And, for families to know that we not only care for their children’s education but their entire well-being,” said Kirkpatrick Middle School Principal Jeffrey Bartolotta. “Now, we hope that this idea spreads to other campuses within the District so that we can help many other families.”

Participating families will be asked to register one time using an on-site QR code via the Tarrant Area Food Bank program to shop for free food. Registered families can return to shop during the hours of operation by simply showing their issued cards. Available groceries items include fresh produce, rice, beans, pasta, cereal, and milk – as they become available.
