Fort Worth ISD Awarded $1 Million Dyslexia Grant
A $1-million-dollar state grant will fund an innovative pilot program for students with dyslexia at two Fort Worth ISD elementary schools this fall.
Second and third-grade students with dyslexia at West Handley and Worth Heights Elementary Schools will be placed in classrooms with highly qualified dyslexia teachers. The teachers will use research-based, specialized literacy instruction and infuse regular grade-level instruction with strategies to support the dyslexic learner.
The Fort Worth ISD is one of only 10 recipients to receive the grant from the Texas Education Agency. The grant period is from now through August 2019.
This is part of the District’s continued commitment to early literacy. Two years ago, under the leadership of Superintendent Kent P. Scribner, the District launched 100x25 FWTX with its goal of 100 percent of third-graders reading on grade level or above by the year 2025. Dr. Scribner is partnering with Mayor Betsy Price and BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead the community-wide Read Fort Worth initiative.
Over the last two years Fort Worth ISD has hired and trained 120 dyslexia teachers to provide services to students identified with dyslexia.
The District will also work with the Education Service Center Region XI in Fort Worth and the Neuhaus Education Center near Houston to provide teacher training and assistive technology to five local districts and schools: Everman ISD, Kennedale ISD, Venus ISD, Arlington Classics Academy, and Texas Leadership Charter Academy of Arlington.
