Fort Worth ISD Students Go to School a Week Early to Deliver Donated Books to Classrooms
About 20 Fort Worth ISD students were “at school” a week early to help their teachers prepare for the new school year – and to put early literacy front and center. The students and their parents joined Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price, Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner and local donor TXU Energy at De Zavala Elementary on Tuesday, August 14 at 1:30 p.m., to unpack and sort more than 1,000 books donated through the efforts of Read Fort Worth. This back-to-school project supported the District’s community-wide 100x25 FWTX initiative.

Read Fort Worth is donating the books through its Classroom Library Campaign designed to support 100x25 FWTX, which sets a goal of 100 percent of Fort Worth third-graders reading on grade level or above by 2025.
Superintendent Scribner is partnering with Mayor Price and BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead Read Fort Worth, the community-wide early literacy initiative. For the Classroom Library Campaign, Read Fort Worth has secured book donations from supporters such as TXU Energy.
“As a longtime corporate citizen, TXU Energy is dedicated to giving back to the people of Fort Worth,” Brad Watson, senior director of TXU Energy community affairs, said, “and there’s no greater investment than the education of our young people and nurturing their love of reading.”
The event marks the second campus delivery made possible through Read Fort Worth’s Classroom Library Campaign, an initiative developed with Fort Worth ISD leaders to ensure that young students and teachers have easy and equitable access to high-interest, culturally-relevant books throughout the school day. Donors delivered 1,200 titles to Sunrise-McMillan Elementary School in May; a third event is planned later in August at S.S. Dillow Elementary School.
Read Fort Worth has raised more than $160,000 in gifts and commitments to date. The Real Estate Council of Greater Fort Worth also is dedicating proceeds of its annual dodgeball tournament on Sept. 20 to this campaign. And, a generous supporter has challenged the business community to raise $100,000 for the campaign through Sept. 30, pledging to double the value of gifts to $200,000 and speed book deliveries to the first schools targeted for support based on need.
