FWISD JROTC Department Hosts Annual JCLC Camp
Over 160 Fort Worth ISD cadets recently participated in the District’s annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC).
The one-week camp, hosted June 3-7 at the District’s outdoor JROTC Leadership Learning Center in Azle, offers cadets “ an environment based in a military setting which emphasizes a practical application of teamwork, character development, citizenship and leadership development,” said retired 1st Sgt. Terrence Campbell of FWISD’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Department.
Removed from a classroom setting, 164 rising ninth through 12th-grade students are placed in a mostly outdoor environment where they are instructed on land navigation, participate in health-related courses focusing on drugs and drown prevention, and rope-climbing exercises. New this year is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experience that includes robotics and that focuses on team building with technology currently utilized in FWISD classrooms. Tarrant County College is providing an interactive Mobile GO Outreach specialist and driver program demonstrating career choice opportunities at the camp, retired 1st Sgt. Campbell said.
Total, 18 FWISD JROTC programs, 44 instructors and 11 active duty military servicemen participated in the camp.
Throughout the summer, JROTC groups from other North Texas schools will go through the JCLC camp.
High School JROTC units are required to participate in an annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge, and each school is required to have cadets participate per U.S. Army Cadet Command regulations. Cadets are recommended for camp by their campus instructors.
Since 2012, the District has conducted its JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge in Azle. In recent years, exercises have motivated students to overcome their fears, read a map and sharpen skills for becoming productive members of their community. The camp culminates with the cadets’ parents being invited to Azle to observe how they’ve spent their week.
