Kick Starting the Day with Breakfast
WHAT: National School Breakfast Week
WHO: FWISD Child Nutrition Services, Texas Christian University Athletics and Children at Risk
WHEN: Monday, March 5- Friday, March 9
SUMMARY:
Fort Worth Independent School District is encouraging students to start their day off with a healthy breakfast at school.
From March 5 to 9, the District is celebrating National School Breakfast Week. The Child Nutrition Services Department is partnering with Texas Christian University Athletics and Children at Risk this week to encourage breakfast participation at school.
The District kicked off the 2018 “I Heart School Breakfast” celebration Friday, March 2, with Breakfast for Lunch in honor of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. The themed lunch coincided with National Read Across America Day. This week during breakfast, Child Nutrition Services is serving menu items based on a popular book series by author, Laura Numeroff. TCU athletes will also visit various schools this week, emphasizing the importance of breakfast serving as fuel for sports and learning.
Daily, FWISD serves more than 30,000 meals for breakfast through the federal-funded School Breakfast Program. Two times as many meals are served daily during lunch. Child Nutrition Services officials say this week is about highlighting how easy it is for students to take advantage of school breakfast.
“A healthy breakfast at the start of the day is one way to ensure students are getting the best education possible,” said Ashley Phillips, Child Nutrition Services assistant director. “National School Breakfast Week helps us educate parents and students about all the healthy, great-tasting choices we offer all year long.”
