YWLA Celebrates Founder’s Day
Young Women’s Leadership Academy hosted its first Founder’s Day celebration, today, May 22 in the school’s Commons area. The event celebrated the late Lee Posey, his wife, Sally Posey, and YWLA’s founding teachers and administrators.
Lee and Sally Posey founded the Foundation for the Education of Young Women, now Young Women’s Preparatory Network, in 2002. The network joined the Fort Worth Independent School District in 2010 to create a public/private partnership. The partnership created Young Women’s Leadership Academy, which is FWISD’s first single-gender school for young women.
In addition to current FWISD administrators, Superintendent Kent P. Scribner and school board Trustee Ashley Paz, the event featured administrators and community members who were active in founding of the school.
Dr. Scribner opened the celebration with remarks. Other remarks were expected to be made by Dr. Melody Johnson, FWISD superintendent at the time YWLA was established; Dr. Jennifer Brooks, a founding member of the YWLA Advisory Board, which eventually became the Foundation for the Young Women’s Leadership Academy of Fort Worth; Precinct 1 Commissioner Roy Brooks, a founding community supporter and Mia Hall, the school’s founding principal. Ms. Paz, District 9 school board trustee, was also expected to speak.
The event culminated with the presentation of Golden Apples to all current teachers and staff who were with the school at its opening.
Founder’s Day celebrations are being hosted by all eight Young Women’s Preparatory Network schools in Texas.
